Two 1880s tintypes. The dog has some great tinting.
The images were taken at the same sitting and show a man obsessed with his hunting dog.
The dog is the focus in each tintype-- I think Dad used his daughter as an excuse to get some tintypes of his favorite dog!
The father can be seen in the second photo holding the dog still.

Wonderfully poignant photos, and as per usual, your keen eye has picked what is perhaps the most salient and unusual feature of this series. A most apt entry title. Smiling large.
Thanks mikko-- appreciate your comments and appreciation of the image!

Just so interesting. I heard an interview of the developers of some Victorian medical show this week on NPR. One of them has a collection of over a million medical and "dead" photos. I wanted to call him and visit his collection.
Interesting-- wish I had heard the show.
The post mortems are very popular among collectors-- so much so that the BS post mortems are huge in online selling. A search of ebay will reveal a ton of the living identified as PM subjects.
More prolific than Confederate images now!
