This is a big one (40 x 55 cm) and very antique. It has been well preserved because it has been framed but still you can she the stripes of silk where it has been folded (second picture), some of the colors had faded a bit mainly blues and yellows. It is embroidery in silk and some details are painted like the face and arms of the girl (Is she whiskered? Look carefully under the nose, perhaps it was its shade.) There are tiny brilliant stones in the collar, three buttons that seem of metal, sequins in the black gillet and gold stitches in the countering the lace and the bonnet. She is a wealthy gardener: The skirt is texturated with curls, the black stockings are heavy, the shoes are decorated. All in the picture points to the first days of springtime with berry garlands and butterflies. I think that it is from the first year of 1800 and that has been done by a British lady (http://austenonly.com/2012/01/25/ladies-accomplishments-silk-pictures-and-filigree-work/). We bought it this year 2014, it was not exposed into a shop and when I asked the price Sergio almost faints, he does not know anything about fabric but I knew that silk was very old, you can see it has the weave interlaced. When he got convinced that it was so old and catch the details approved the 25 US it costed.
That is an extraordinary and beautiful piece of embroidery. Very fine.
The silk ground looks very heavy - is it backed with anything?

Kivatinitz, I was reading your comments to Kyratango and you both say (in beautiful english) that the shoes and clothes were too expensive for a gardener. I immediately thought of Marie-Antoinette, the wife of Louis XVI of France, she liked to dress up as a peasant and work in the gardens at Versailles. I searched for some photos on the internet and the lady in your embroidery looks very like this picture of Marie Antoinette.

Thanks for your long comment. Yes I think she could be, because of the so short skirt, the nude arms the golden rimmed coife- It is very interesting interchanging ideas with you and the others.
