You never know for sure what's going to show up when you buy a sign that's got 4-5 thick coats of paint on it, but that's part of the fun of the hunt! Surprise is right under the next coat of paint & the thrill is when you finally get through to the porcelain. In this case it was a third Malco for us, but after all we were in New Mexico & that was the home of Malco. This particular sign was in very good shape under all the paint and the colors were still brilliant as they had a lot of protection for a long time with all that paint on them. It took three days to get all the paint off and it was a lot of work and 3 gallons of paint remover. It's always a great thrill to find an old original sign and then to be able to find the owner and then to be able to talk him in to selling it to you is a true winning combination! This particular find came from Hatch NM and was right under the nose of another sign collector, but perhaps he wasn't interested in any more signs with poles? You can see this one finished and standing at Lakeside Storage in Provo at our FREE Petrolania Museum or just look us up on the net at aaaLakeside Storage.com
Yep! The old bald fat guy with the torch in the shorts and slippers is me getting ready to cut the bolts off and drop the sign on a stack of tires we borrowed from the tire shop we bought it from. We hooked a rope on it and cut the nuts off and pulled it down on the tires and did zero damage to anything! As thrilling as anything I ever did as a kid and I'm old now!
Your collection truly is extraordinary, and if I was in the States I would drop by for a gander!
