These rare Conoco 6' sign frames are extremely hard to find because they are so heavy they all went to the scrap yards when the price of steel went so high a few years back. We felt really lucky to get these along with a couple of more at an old sign shop when we were traveling on a hunt for signs and Petrolania. The old sign guy insisted he didn't have any old signs or anything related to old sign stuff but as a long time junk scrounger I couldn't believe anyone could have as much stuff as he had and not have something really cool hidden in the pile. It wasn't too long before I stumbled on to the stack of old Conoco sign frames and when I did I got that "gold miners dream" RUSH of hitting the "mother load" once more!!!
The fun is in the hunt, but like fishing, it's really fun when you are "catching" not just fishing! Since most sign collectors just collect the signs to hang on a wall somewhere and since the frames weigh much more than the signs, the frames usually got junked so there are a lot more signs out there than there are frames and the frames are extremely thick so they are pretty heavy and hard to handle. This was a lucky find! What are we going to do with them? Good question! Our plan is to trade one or two for something cool and keep one as we hope to find another 6' sign to put it in.
