While returning from a trip to Las Cruces NM to pick up a load of signs that I had been purchasing over the previous 6 months, I managed to see off in the distance on a highway about 1/2 mile away, what looked like the shape of an old Phillips Sign. I asked my son who was driving with me if I was seeing what I thought I was seeing, to which he replied that he thought I was! We drove another several miles before finding a place we could get off the Interstate and turn around and go back and when we finally arrived at the approximate location of the sign, this is what we saw!!! Surprise!!! As you can see, it was dusk at the time of arrival and we still had to find the owner of the old gas station, convince him to sell us the sign and then take the sign down and get it loaded on our trailer that was already full. The story of finding the owner and convincing him to sell us his sign that was NOT for sale is quite the tale and ought to be written up in a full article as it was one of those experiences NEVER to be forgotten. This was definitely a case where the fun was in the hunt! Once purchased it was nothing but hard work to take it down and load it up on a full trailer. Great hobby! Yes I am the old guy in the shorts with the set of torches and the neighbor dog wondering what I am doing. I still have scars on my toes from the hot slag jumping off and burning me as I cut the bolts off to bring the sign down. Isn't it fun to reminisce the stories of the hunts?
This sign along with a large Petroliania collection of other signs and gas pumps can be seen at aaaLakeside Storage in Provo Ut or at our Webpage online.
Great story already - where's the novel!
Good grab..
