I purchased this on eBay recently and was curious about the history. The vendor told me she acquired it from a collector's estate sale in Denver, Colorado.
She listed it as: NAVAJO 25.7G STERLING SILVER SIGNED BUD WOODARD 5 1/2" BAND WITH A 3/4" GAP CUFF BRACELET WITH A 7/8" BY 7/8" DEEP GREEN JADE STONE FROM A FINE COLLECTORS ESTATE.
I am not sure if the name is the artist. I have not been able to find anything except there was a M.L. Woodard who was a trader in the 30's and 40's. He had a son name Tom Woodard who ended up opening up a few museums in Arizona. Both are deceased.
I don't know if "Bud" is a nickname used and not sure if this cuff had anything to do with the above mentioned names.
The vendor told me it was from either the 30's or 40's.
Beautiful!!
This is interesting and I was very surprised to see the use of jade in this setting. Does it have hallmarks that say Bell or Sterling?
If this jade was added at a later time, the jeweler did an excellent job of putting that stone in there.
I will do my best today to try and get my bracelets (no stones) out and see which ones have the hallmark. I can't remember at the moment which they are but either Navajo or Zuni. I also believe they are from the 50's - 60's.
P.S. Maybe the person that I think added that stone signed it like that ??? I'm not sure, but I haven't seen the original silversmith sign like that before. Does not mean I'm right tho.
There is no hallmark. Could it be the collector who marked his items in his collection? Not sure if collectors would do this.
With the quality work on this cuff, it might have been the collector. I find it hard to believe the artist would just rough scratch their name like that.
I agree with you on that. But I don't know that a collector would do that either. Maybe the original owner's heir, to make sure they got it, right?!
Very interesting Val...I would like to ask you also, was (or is) the stone in yours jade too? It's definitely beautiful and like I said, the way the stone sits in there so perfectly, it made me curious. I'm glad you commented on this, the bracelets I have had always either had or have turquoise or plain silver, no jade.
Good to know tho, thanks for your input!!! Sue
