Any idea how old this rocker is? I am thinking about refinishing it and if it isn't very old or valuable I may be more likely to give it a contemporary look.
I have looked thru lots of old rocker photos and can't seem to get close.
I have 2 of them that were basically unusable & stored in my grandmother's attic. I had them redone in a muted floral print & have been enjoying using them for the last 20 years. The print that is on your right now is not original so I don't think it would hurt any value to redo it the way you want. Mine are from the early 1900's/late 1800's-carved walnut across top of back but yours looked a little newer.
Thanks for your comments and I am going to update the fabric/stuffing on it. I guess I can throw away the bag of horsehair that it was originally filled with. Have no idea why I was keeping that or the springs.
Keep them for at least another month & see if anyone else has a different opinion since I'm not an expert. I had a professional redo my chairs & I don't know what she replaced the springs with--but I do remember her saying that new springs weren't made as strong or lasting as the old. (I think she used extra firm foam & it worked wonderfully) Good Luck.
Did you stick with a conventional pattern or go brave and do something a little more modern? I want something a little more updated but classical in pattern so that whoever ends up with this chair will want to keep it and not give it away.

sorry I haven't responded sooner. I simply picked a pattern that I liked and would be long wearing. My 2 chairs are doing well- They've lasted 15 years and are just now starting to show wear.
A picture speaks 1000 words but this is not the picture. Pre WWII or during those years. Refinishing it won't hurt it as it has seen some work previously. Try to keep all the original hardware and webbing if possible.
