- In the early 1960's, Carroll Shelby, a celebrated race car manufacturer and driver, turned his talents to producing street racers. The Shelby GT350 roared into the showrooms in 1965. Although successful and well-received, Shelby tired of trying to keep within U.S. federal safety and emissions standards and Ford took over production in 1968. - Ford toned down the 1968 models performance for luxury but also introduced a convertible model. - Shelby Mustangs were built from 1965 to 1970 (GT350's and GT500's) and the nameplate was revived in 2007 - The Ford Mustang celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year with the 2015 model.
