Helping my aunt clean out one of the houses that she owns, I came across this clock. She can't remember much anymore, but she and my uncle(who is now deceased), use to enjoy going to auctions and yard sales all around northeastern USA for over 6o years. The house is packed with things, but this clock I took out of the trash heap and asked her to try and remember anything about it. Nothing yet....
I did look up this Forestville Manufacturing Company and J.C. Brown, but how can I tell if this is real or something put together to look old?
Wood case measures approximately 29" long , 16 3/4" across. Glass door top and bottom is Gainsborough oil painting reproduction of "Master Heathcote". There are two very heavy weights, pendulum, and key. On the mechanism parts is "J. C. Brown" and it looks like "1848'

Quick look I can tell that it is an ogee clock-- very typical clock of the middle of the 19th century.

The case looks good and typical of the era. The dial is a replacement. Bottom window is often reverse painted (yours looks to be a print on the window).

Can't see the rest to tell.

Check out the maker with an online search and you will surely discover more about your clock.

Thank you Scott for the information about the dial and you are correct, that is not a reverse paint on the bottom window. I am enjoying trying to find out more about this clock. I want to know how to clean it and get it working. It would look good in my home office.

I'd take it to an old style clock shop.

Check in your local phone book and you can probably find someone adept at cleaning/ repairs on antique clocks.

      Good luck!

      Be ready for winding.

As I recall they usually need winding once a day or once a week (depending on movement). Mine sits on the mantle-- looking great but only correct twice a day!

The glass bottom of the door having a glued in painting, instead of the hand painting or etching, does that mean that this also is a replacement like the dial on the clock?

A glued in painting would not have been original.
