Seeking information about this interesting piece of pottery...

I recently acquired this interesting little piece of pottery (stoneware?). It is about 4 1/2 inches tall and about 3 3/4 inches at the widest point and is marked SH 97 but appears to be very old. Any information that anyone could provide to help me identify the maker would be much appreciated.
