    this gun was in my dads collection of things. I know its missing the handle cover and top piece, but it is still a rare gun. can anyone tell me if its worth anything in this condition? I think they made 1,000 of these in 1856.

      Hi.
      That is the 1860 Savage Navy revolver. They made in the vicinity of 12,000 of them. It's worth something even in the stripped condition displayed. If you want to sell it I might be interested. My e-mail is diamondave@gmail.com.

      My favorite gun. Just one bad-ass looking gun; it said a lot about the times and the people that used it.

      This is outstanding. It goes to show that Sam Colt wasn't the only game in town. This specimen sorta reminds me of an old Colt Root. It sorta has that stance to it.
      Diamonddave got it right. I've torn my study apart trying to find an old Flayderman 2nd Edition and I'm looking at it as I type. so here's what I see----
      SAVAGE REVOLVING FIRE-ARMS COMPANY, MIDDLETOWN, CONN. NAVY MODEL REVOLVER. Made c.1861-mid 1860's; total quantity 20,000.
      36 caliber. 6-shot round cylinder. 7 and 1/8 " octagonal barrel.
      Hinged type loading lever assembly. Flat sided frames, fitted with a heart-shaped trigger/lever guard.
      Two piece walnut grips. Blue finish, with casehardened hammer and lever, trigger guard anf triggers.
      Serial numbered generally with two sets of numbers. Standard marking on framestamp (above cylinder): SAVAGE R.F.A. CO./H.S. NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17, 1856/JAN. 18, 1859, MAY 15, 1860.
      Most of the Savage Navy revolver production were made on government contracts, and inspector markings on the grips are often observed. Total of government purchases was 11.984. Balance of sales were primarily yo civilians. Comparison should be made with the North & Savage Figure 8 revolvers, from which the Savage Navy evolved.
      This book that I'm getting this info from was printed back in 1990 I think.
      The value of this gun is listed as this--Good=400.00 Fine=800.00
