This post is in response to vintagefran's post who has an A. Tsosie Jemez wedding pot on display here at CW. The pattern and coloration of these pots are very similar. I also haven't been able to find the name G. Madalena Jemez anywhere. I just thought this post might create enough interest to get someone with expertise in Mexican pottery to help us find some information about these Makers that are most likely related. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas about these makers or the pieces I would love to hear Them. Thanks
Beautiful!!
Thanks Sean!
Your very welcome Vrgdc!!
Thanks Vrgdc! I've been looking for ages and found a few alike from Jamez by different people. Still not found A. Tsosie. Though plenty of others. It'd be great to know more. Do you have an idea how old they are?
Vintagefran, You're welcome!
I have absolutely no idea. Most of the stuff that I have was inherited and there's a little bit of everything which makes it even harder to sort through all of this stuff.
I'm just trying to find out as much as can. Thanks
Hi vrgdc, ooh sounds fun sorting through a bit of everything:) It would be nice to find out more about these. I think i read that a Tsosie ( not A. Tsosie) started around the '60s, i wouldn't be surprised if they're still being made today.
I'll link them together, if you don't mind, it'll make it easier to flip back & forth :)

Vintagefran,
Take a look at this ebay page. About half way down you'll see two Jemez pieces that have the name Toledo attached to them. One of them is very nice!

I found this link on Etsy, hope can help.
Ooh I've just seen your link. They seem to vary hugely in prices, i guess some are rarer than others or the sellers are trying it on, lol.

Yes, funny roll! ;)
Vintagefran, Your last link is great! Thanks
Virginia, Thanks for your help too.
If you search the net you will find articels about the artist. You refer to Mexican pottery but it should say New Mexico? Beautiful indeed!
Thanks Elisabethan, I just found out that the Jemez pottery is from New Mexico from one of Vintagefran's links. I've been looking at this style of pottery all day and it is very beautiful.
Search on line for jemez pueblo pottery (New Mexico). Different artists would have the Jemez on their pottery. I have a 'storyteller' marked R Jemez that's from New Mexico USA.
Ok, yes I love the style. I went to a museum of native american art in New Mexico ones when I visited the states. That was where I first saw this type of pottery. I love the designs and patterns! When you've seen the style you never forgett them. Later a friend gave me the storyteller as a gift. I love it!
Thanks Elisabethan, I'll give it a try. I just went to a site and found out that Jemez is the name of a Pueblo Indian tribe , and there's an Isleta Pueblo Indian tribe that also makes those storytellers which go for over $800.00 a piece. Very nice!
Awsome, love it!
Hi Vrgdc & Elizabeth, great info. V, i hadn't picked up Jemez was a tribe, i thought a town or area...dashes off to update post...:)
Thx
Its a very distinctive look, i love it. Initially i suspected South American, so wasn't so far off, lol. But now i know Jemez pottery i think I'd recognise it. Thanks to all involved :)
Thanks Vintagefran.
Hi, me again. Sorry for not letting this go. Maybe you've found your answers, if interested look at this page and see if it can be of value to you. It has information about artist.

Elisabethan,
This is fine keep them coming! I still haven't found the name G. Madalena and I didn't see the one vintagefran was looking for either. Thanks
G. Madelena is Genevieve Madelena, born April 26, 1931, who began making pottery in the l940's, according to Gregory Schaaf's "Southern Pueblo Pottery, 2000 Artist Biographies."
Jemez Pueblo is one of the 19 pueblo tribes of the Rio Grande Valley in northern New Mexico. The Indian tribes of that region were called "Pueblos" by the Spanish because they lived in permanent village settlements (pueblos) as opposed to having a nomadic lifestyle like the plains Indians, or living in scattered individual family units like the Navajo.
Good info Thanks!
