Hi I collect old rev counters and speedometers and love the way they are made. My father was an instrument maker in the RAF here in England which is why I guess I have an interest. I collect mostly Smiths , Jaeger and racing , a few months ago a couple of these rev counters came up on ebay and I bought the pair .I have done a bit of detective work to see what they were fitted to and found out that they are a very rare Smiths streamline chronometric that were fitted to works racing bikes in the early to mid 1950s and possibly some cars. I have found some pictures of racing bikes with them fitted but I am not sure what would have revved up to 16'000 RPM in that era. Can any one please help.?

Yes it sure is . The British bikes revved to about 9k I think. I have seen them fitted to AJS 7Rs ,Velocette KTTs and other similar bikes but not up to 16k . It would be great if you could ask your friend thanks :)

He thinks it was possibly fitted to a BRM of that period, as they revved very high and generally carried Smiths instruments. They made models of various types as customer cars, distinct from the GP cars.
Also probably used on bikes as well even though that amount of rev counting was not needed.
Hope that helps a bit. Probably sources there in the UK could confirm or deny!
