I would say amazing condition for the age of it. You must dig very gently.

How did you attribute a police belt to NY?

The first police badges were issued in London A number of years later. I wonder how this came to be earlier, but I will learn from the reply. Interesting post but I won't follow it. Let's be real.

Two piece "Police" buckles date from the civil War era-- not sure of the relevence of a London police badge to the discussion!

I have found much dispute about it. I could actually care less but found it interesting at some point in life, Like no man shall keep or bear title. This may have been defiance at it's best. I still question it being a dig.

I still don't understand how the first police BADGE has any relevence to an early police BUCKLE.

This one being dug or from that era is another discussion.

I will back off Scott. Was this a watchman? Constable? Police Officer? 1860's United States? I think not but will be glad to learn.

Ok let's c I'll try to answer all questions and will answer any others. To start with. It is being questioned if this is an actual dig and I must dig very gently. Well yes it's dug y would I even lie about it being dug or not. Secondly u would have go buck wild digging to do much damage I mean it's made of heavy brass I dug it w my lesche and it was only a few inches deep. I found many items from this site datingfrom that period.

I'm no expert by any means but I am competent enough to use the internet and do alittle research. My research shows me I have a civil war ERA New York police belt plate. Of coarse it's missing the wreath. I looked for it to no avail (sad face) woulda been awesome to pull it out as well. New York United States hah yeah. I know this one is very rare. Now I posted on here hoping maybe an expert would know something I don't and the real value because even with the research I've done it still didn't provide very much info. I also feel like it's in pretty nice shape but also wish it was in better shape. If u can't tell it does have a benchmark 24 to the left of P in Police

These two piece belts were made in the US during the Civil War era.

I deal in Civil War items on a regular basis.

The patina on this example looks a little odd-- have you oiled it or put something on it?

The jury is still out (for ME) on this being an authentic example. I am NOT doubting your story-- this is just based on WHAT I CAN SEE.

Again, there is NO DOUBT that two piece POLICE buckles were made during the US Civil War.

That pic is from when I first found the plate. That is a bathroom sink and only water on it.. I'll post another post w two new pics I just took... And I do believe it to b authentic as everything I found in the same area is time period.. Flying eagle pennies Indian head pennies old buckles pad locks up to early 1900s w v niks n mercs to a Hickok silver buckle a very rare sears chief bicycle head badge .. Off top of my head I think that's all the best find could be forgetting a few.. So I highly doubt in the middle of all that there's a fake buckle from time period of everything else wouldn't make sense.

      You'd be surprised.

Many Civil War battlefields/ camps were used as SAW training camps. Many CW campsites were used for varying purposes after the war.

I have many friends that are diggers and they habitually find 20th century trash and even reproduction items in original CW era sites.
