Hi again - this little pocket watch was my partner's fathers and may have come from his grandfather. He has no idea if it is valuable or not and I can't find the makers mark anywhere - I can find similar but they always seem to be in line rather than in four points like this one. Is this silver or silver plated or neither? I know the pics aren't great - my photo won't zoom in nicely - the top one is a lion passant (I think!) the right hand side looks like a 'q' the bottom says SP in an oval and the left side is a shield? within a ?lozenge shape or could it be the outline of a panther's head or something? Any help much appreciated. Many thanks. Samantha. x

Looks like the top one is the Lion Passant....and the other one is a Monarch head in a shield.....

Thank you - I was thinking it was sterling silver. So that means it doesn't matter how the symbols are arranged? :)

I've just found another site - could that be London's assay mark - the head in shield? http://www.acsilver.co.uk/shop/pc/British-English-Silver-Hallmarks-d84.htm

      London.
      The 'q' looks like 1871.

      SP is the maker's mark:

Thank you - all starting to piece together now! I've bookmarked that maker's mark site - it's much better than one I've been using. I've changed my mind on the mark - think it's SF (the F is just a blur really - so could have been either a p or f) Samuel Freeman (dates seen are 1862 and 1880) from Coventry which would make sense of the assay mark being a leopard's head. I'd like to have a look inside - any idea on how to open the back anyone? I can see a little bit that I can push down but I don't know what to do then! :) thanks again. Samantha.
