Bought at an estate auction. Auctioneer said he was told it was a stagecoach strongbox, but a stagecoach gold dust box makes more sense. It is SUPER heavy. No markings. About 12 wide. Thick walls probably filled with lead. Any info appreciated.
I had this very same box as a kid in Wisconsin in the mid 1970's...My Dad was an Antique Dealer, much in the vain of The American Pickers. I traveled all over the mid-west states as a kid with him. Cold knocking on Farmers doors and Houses out in the middle of nowhere...The show is like a flashback to me. WOW!!! My dad painted it black and I had it in my room for a stash box for my valuables. It was very heavy when I was 8 years old, and totally Identicle to this one exactly. He buried it once on our country property, with a portion of one corner sticking out, and then brought his friend over to where he had it buried to play a joke on him. He acted like he accidentally kicked it and said "What the Hell Is This?" His friend thought he found some kind of treasure for a while...It was a great prank. My Dad was & Is still a jokester. How much do you want for it??? I am interested.
P.S. I want to go to work for Mike & Frank... I will do whatever it takes, Antiques have been my passion since I was 5 years old. My Grandpa & Dad have had many Antique shops over the years.
Todd...contact me at velvet1@arvig.net to discuss.
Since posting, I have found an identical box on an online auction (not Ebay). Only difference is mine appears to have been painted, and does not have the Wells Fargo tag that the other one has. Other than that mine is a twin of that one. I figure the Wells Fargo tag was probably removed when it was painted.
