HA! Wow. That is definitely something. I can see why it stuck in your mind.
Very nice photo's but a bit dark. I will stick with it being English walnut and very well aged at that. The type wood doesn't define where it was made and is just my opinion. If you are trying for an ancient antique I think you may need to regroup. Antique? YES! Super old? NO! I use the U.S. standard for an antique ( I have been burned before).
I can't tell what it uses for rollers? It obviously has a grove routed out for ball rollers. I needed a base for a band saw that would rotate & made a setup using a shallow routed circular grove in the base & top rotating piece & simply used marbles for rollers so that it could rotate 360 degrees & had a locking peg at 4 positions. Worked great! Works great for "lazy Susans" & etc.. Wood workers take note. If you have lost your marbles, they are cheap to replace.
Blunderbuss2 the last picture shows a close up of oneach of the rollers inset on the underside of the seat part. They mate with the groove shown in the top of the base part.
I saw that when I went back & looked closer. Just waiting to see if I got any comments from wood workers. Glass marbles would have worked better & given less trouble.
I agree with you on the marbles.... no chance of corrosion or binding. I've used marbles for other unconventional applications as well like floating my old carousel cd player on them to fix a skipping bass issue.
