George VAN SAAKE
b Berlin, Germany 28 Mar 1902 to George G SAAKE. Lived in Palmdale, CA
occupation: artist, portrait painter, pianist
educator.
I was thinking same thing. There are a bunch of sites for art.Check galleries If he is well known. His name will show up. Look at vase and his signiture so sloppy. this is an amateur.Sorry dizzydave
Maybe it was his early stuff before he got better. This is a still life painting.
Well he might not have been a Van Gogh, but he is a known Artist. He has been in many shows in the Palmdale Area. Showed at the Antelope Valley Fair back in the day. In fact I seen a article online of a Gallery Showing of the "Late" George Van Saake. That was for the Lancaster Museum Art Gallery. In fact George was well known for his early portraits of Movie Stars. My information above is correct for this Artist. Have any idea how many times a Artist has heard the same words? "Amatuer". Some of the Greatest Artist were refered as such, but it comes to the "Eye of The Beholder" Its looks to be his version of Van Goghs work. Dave
You are right dizzydave art is hard to tell and even something that does not look like much can be a great piece. I have alot of art here too but im just not sure. I am sorry!
you really need to check and compare signatures, consider the evolvement of the artists work, etc. The art world is alive with reproductions and some are so good they are hard to evaluate. Many names of old artist are hard to research thereby giving rise to fraudulent practices. Study , compare, and research. Good luck. I will check on some of many sources too. Good luck.
I seen a old picture of a Gallery Showing of some of his works, it has a few Florals. I would doubt that someone would reproduce his work. I don't think he is a high selling artist at this time. Repros are more likey in artist like Picasso, Renoir, Robert Woods etc. I seen a lot of fake Picasso paintings on eBay over the yrs. LOL I would try to contact one of the places I mentioned before, since they have other pieces by him for comparison. Toyman, no apoligy needed, I see a lot of Art and think what a pice of @#*&, and it ended up being a good one! Take a look on eBay for Florida Highwaymen, I found one for $1.00 yrs back and sold for $1600.00 a few days later! I though what a cheap painting on masonite and house trim nailed around edges to make it look like a frame. LOL Dave
Thanks It won't happen again.Art is funny as I said.I should have never made that comment.I also left you a comment on my 1930 roy cox race car.I do like all kinds of art too .Its the blending of the colors thhat is so nice sometimes.
I didnt mean to infere that someone reproduced his work, but a signature can be
reproducing art is a legitimate business as long as it is contractural. Many well known galleries sell reproduced art and original art too by the artist. There are many artist whose income depends on reproducing. Copies and fakes in this age are as prolific in the contemporary market as well as the old masters,etc.....
For instance, there are artists who make their livings by copying and signing paintings by such artists as A. D. Greer. for one example.
The key, I believe, is to research, know what you have, and never pass it off as the absolute original unless you know for sure. Once more, good luck, you have very legitimate questions.
I knew George Van Saake well. In the 1950's I was editor of the Antelope Valley Press, and George had a studio in nearby Vincent. As a child in Germany he appeared in film, and was recognized as a piano protege. He came to America with his father before WWII, and during that conflict worked for Ford Motor Company camouflaging its Rouge River plant. His main claim to fame was as a portrait painter to the Hollywood stars. He also traveled extensively in Mezzo America, doing character portraits of indigenous Indians, primarily the Maya.
Are you still seeking work on Van Saake? I am the retired curator from the City of Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery and presented an exhibition of his work about 10 years ago. Florals were a rare for him. Contact me for more info.
Yes, George was known for painting portraits of Hollywood Stars but he also had paintings of florals (similar to the one above) and abstracts.
In the 30's, my father, Thomas O'Malley, spent his youth traveling with George. I have some old newspaper articles from various places George visited, pictures with Hollywood stars, and some of his art exhibit programs. Based on these articles, he was considered a well know international artist. My sister and I inherited several of his paintings (florals and portraits of my Dad as a young boy). I'm no expert, but in my opinion, the signature on the floral painting appears to be similar to his other paintings. In the late 50's my father moved from NY to Palmdale to be with George and our family spent many years visiting George at his home and art studio until his death in 1977. I wish I would have know about the exhibition of his work that took place 13 years ago. Please let me know if/when there will be another exhibition displaying his work.
I have a van Saake, too. Quite like it, also a floral. wish there were more info. I acquired mine in toronto, it has his business card as a restorer and framer from Detroit.
When I was a student in 9th grade I had the chance to study art from George Van Saake. He painted movie stars, and famous dignitaries in the early 1940's. In the 60's he started to do oil paintings of floral and still life. When I met him he had moved towards watercolor abstracts. At one time he was in the who's who of artists.
He lived in a very large house in the Los Angeles forest over looking Palmdale.
In the living room he had two grand pianos and was quite accomplished musician.. He had his first piano recital in Berlin. In his later years he suffered from Parkinson's disease.
I have been looking for more information about Van Saake as I have come into some of his paintings. Is there any updated information on his work? I would like to know if there is any demand for his work. I have like others in their posts some family connection with the artist.
I have three of his paintings: a floral, a western scene and an abstract. My father met him in the early '60s. He purchased the paintings then. I remember our family visiting him when I was young. He lived at the top of a winding mountain road.
