Another little item from Volunteer's of America. This nicely carved dragon is 13 1/2" long 6" high and only a thin 2" wide. It's made of a fairly light weight reddish wood. There are a few chips to the the tail and spines and he's missing part of his horn on one side. He holds a pearl in his front claw. No marks or labels anywhere. I wonder if it was part of something else such as a cabinet. There are three families of Eastern dragons: 3 toed, 4 toed, and 5 toed. Three toed dragons are Japanese. Four toed dragons are Indonesian or Korean. Five toed dragons are Chinese. Oriental dragons are usually shown with a pearl in their mouth, under their chin, or in their claws. This is apparently where the dragon gets its power, and how it ascends to heaven. I can only count three toes holding the pearl so by rights this is a Japanese dragon, but one of the back legs shows possibly four toes. Confusing...now it becomes a Indonesian or Korean dragon. So for sake of argument it was probably made in China. Now that covers all the bases !

      Hi
      Mike
      Nice piece.
I am confused now, because of my colleague at work(she is japanese)told me that what hold the dragon in is claw was an egg, mark of fertility, and for this reason, fertility equal more japanese people are born in this Zodiac sign of the Dragon.

      Interesting

      Cheer
