Nice albumen!
Do you have photos of the back, out of the frame?
scott
I will add a photo of the back but I wasn't sure if I'd be better of leaving it in the frame. What do you think?
Depends on the frame-- if it is orginal, then I would probably leave it in.
Add a photo of the whole frame and the back and I'll give you an idea on age.
scott
Glad you asked him, scott, since there is so much foxing and the photo definitely needs to be professionally reframed with archival materials.
Really nice, PG! Here is the same albumen print by Wakely held by the Chrysler Museum of Art, overall dimensions 9 5/8 x 13 1/4 inches. It doesn't show the back.

Thanks Solver and Scott. I just posted photos of of the frame and the back.
Right as always, scott. I meant to say reframed "in the original frame" no matter the condition and, that's a great frame.
PhotoGuy, I know you are aware of how important it is to also preserve the handwritten inscription and label.
I'm definitely out of my league since I know nothing about photographs but not so for antiquarian art.
GREAT original frame on this one!

Thanks Solver. I may see if it'd be possible to replace the matting with a new archival quality matting and then place archival paper film or paper between the photograph and the wood backing.
Thanks Scott! Any ideas on preserving it?
The "matting" is actually the original mounting board-- no way to replace it.
This albumen print (SAME as what you see on CDV images of the period) is GLUED on to the larger mounting board.
I would think that a thin archival barrier between the wood and the mount certainly wouldn't hurt.
scott
Thanks Scott. I'm sure you know better than I do but there looks like a matting in front of the photo, not just a mounting board unless there was a "matting" component to the mounting board.
I just looked and there is a "matting" that is glued around the edges of the mounting board. It is not flush with the photo so I am not sure if it is part of the matting board or something done when being framed
Thanks, scott, for all your knowledge about the matting. I certainly wasn't aware that they are "glued." Love learning from you.
