I believe the image is actually Jucker not a gargoyle. It originated in Germany long ago but not sure when. Modern spelling is Euchre. He was also called the fool and was adopted in various forms for the face of the Joker on playing cards.
Your right I didnt see the smaller markings of ie behind the C that date would be about right for the family. Not sure if there is a market for stuff like that or museum may b interested? BTW leo here also
and thanks fhr your right it looks like some jokers on older playing cards
good Info from you both thanks lots hope it survives the container trip over
it's safe to say the burner was made by Kauffman. These pewter base oil lamps do seem to be fairly desirable. Unless the lamp base is actually marked somewhere it may be very hard to determine the maker. Oil lamp makers procured burners from various makers, depending on desired use. Burners are considered consumables and it may be that the Kauffmann burner was not the first/original to this lamp, as other burners are available as replacements. There are some knowledgeable lamp folks here on CW; so hopefully they will pop in with insight.
I belong to the Historical Lighting Society of Canada and we deal mostly in N.American lamps. I have seen literally thousands of lamps but the Joker font holder/lamp is new to me. It's certainly not a common lamp and I don't think that it's pewter. It would have been certainly stamped with pewter marks. It is probably Spelter (white metal) that had a bronzed finish at one time which someone completely removed. There are some soluble pastes that can be used to provide a beautiful finish if you do not want the Spelter look. The date mentioned by Riply206 is probably accurate for this lamp.RER(BOB)
Thanks all for the helpful insight I did turn the base over and noticed a " bronze/cooper look" that certainly would fit #Lou the description you mentioned it is pretty much petined over but you can see the cooper color in some spots I am pretty sure all is in tact and original the wick has never been used. I will ask my mother who may have a better idea of its origins also
thanks again to all
