These two wig stands are made of solid ash wood, and thanks to a paper label placed at the back side of one of them, we know they’re Belgian. This is the text appearing on it:

    PARFUMERIE DES RICHES CLAIRES
    permanents à l’huile
    Spécialiste en teintures
    Le Coiffeur FERNAND
    12, rue des Riches Claires
    BRUXELLES

Unfortunately nothing can be found online about this perfume shop nor the coiffeur Fernand.

I guess they have to be wig stands as hairdressers used to make the wigs themselves, or at least would have someone to have them made under commission. In any case, even if we both are in urgent need of hair on top of our heads, one of these stands is used at my hat stand (yes, I am a hat guy in both Winter to keep my head warm and Summertime, to avoid the strong Spanish sun -and yes, I am more a Winter kind of guy) and the other one is a decorative feature at home, placed between two Gio Ponti hands on top of a bookshelf... quite a dramatic sight as you get into the house.

Oh I love these!!! Never seen these before but will certainly keep my eye out now that I know about them...I have two or three of the styrofoam ones and do not care for them at all! Someone even did a horrendous job of trying to draw on the eyes with black marker of all things! Too bad I need them. Hope I find some like yours! Awesome!

Very nice place to store a hat or display one austro . Nice find . I am also a hat girl so a woman's hat would display nice also , Maybe a High fashion MCM one for your colorful house in Red, orange, or yellow :-)

Thanks everyone for looking and loving!!!! And this includes VET, AGH, HO2CULTCHA, RACER, JEWELS, PHIL, SHARE, MANIKIN, VALENTINO, MIKE, GEO and AMBER!!!

I had never seen these before, SHARE... I do believe they must from sometime between late 19th Century and 1920s... difficult to know. The lettering looks pretty old to me. In any case, does anyone know when 2permanents a l'huile" became fashionable? That could be a hint to try and date them .9

By the way, MANU and SHARE, I thought you would love these:

By the way, I just found out these solid wood stands are called "wig blocks"... apparently they still make them today, so go and google for them. You might find one for you :)

Yes they still are available austro but yours are quite old and that makes them much more desirable and that it still has label is amazing . Great pieces I would say since France was leader in fashion and hair styles back in the day as well as today . They would date early 1900 at the time some permanents took 6-8 hrs !

Really? That much time? I'm so happy to be bald :)

Of course not the same thing, but if one's in need of a wig stand (or hat stand), better having it in style.

I can't stop trying to imagine SHARE's eyed styrofoam ones :D LOL LOL

The Styrofoam ones are common for storing wigs on , Yours can be stand alone mannequin head .

I found out the first Salons date back from the mid 1880s... so that would be the oldest these blocks could be, although I think they may be from around 1900.

That is what I thought austro .It is very early and mannequin collectors of heads would place a nice value on it!! I only collect full body miniature one's but many collect just heads . Yours is wonderful piece !!
