My books only go as far as "The ABC's of Nippon Porcelain" and this mark is similar to a couple but nothing like this. Could you post pics of the whole piece? The bottom appears worn so it's probably old. I don't have a clue as to the Japanese character in your photo. Did you take off the label or did you find it this way?
(I keep telling myself no more books, no more books...)
Well, wouldn't you know it, I thought I'd give the book another quick scan and there it was. It's mark #197. The hyphen in the book example isn't touching and there are no dots under hand and painted. I'm thinking your piece is real but we need to see the whole. Usually fake marks are either the green M within a wreath or a blue wreath (these are very collectible items). Visit the International Nippon Collector's Club site to check on fake marks and how to spot them.
Thanks for the info...I will take a picture of the whole vase and the bottom again for you when I get home...this is exactly the way I bought it at a garage sale on the weekend...how old is mark # 197?
Braider/Phil...I post a couple of pics and the size for you.....any info would be appreciated....thanks
can anyone help me here?
Logie, part of determining if something is "something" is to see the whole. Post a pic of the piece and maybe we can be more helpful. There are very obvious fakes and true or authentic Nippon ware. Sometimes all it takes is a glance at the whole piece.
I have to admit that the Japanese or Chinese character that is showing is puzzling. Is it under the glazing or marked on top of it?
As to age, the "official" Nippon era stretches from 1890 to 1920. But some marks were apparently used after that so you really have a puzzle. We need more pieces to play with!
The gold characters are under the glaze and the flowers are raised on the vase and outlined in a gold coloured paint...thanks for your help....if you need more pics please let me know....
It's actually 10 3/4 to the top of the handles and 9 3/4 from the base to opening on top..,hope this helps you to identifying it.,,
Well, it looks like Nippon to me but remember no real appraisal is ever made unless you can hold it in your hands. There's wear on the handles and I've seen this pattern in a slightly different form; looks like wisteria. I have a couple of pieces with similar flower decoration. Maybe I'll check the image size of my very tall vase and post it soon.
Yes I came across Wisteria too and I have seen some similar but the markings on the base bottom is what is driving me crazy...thanks
I assume its a fake....thanks
