Iwata Toshichi (1893-1980) is often called the father of modern Japanese art glass.

I have mentioned him in a previous post when I very excitedly got my first piece of Iwata glass, but this piece truly shows the strong relationship between art glass influenced by Venetian glass (where Iwata worked for a while) and Japanese culture.

A large piece at 32cm (12.5in) it has been blown into a very classical urn shape but with the addition of quite Asian ornate gold handles.

I have spent many hours looking at Japanese glass in recent months and I think this is one of the best pieces of Iwata Toshi glass I have seen.

I feel privileged to own it.
