I found this coin/token in a box with a lot of old coins and some other hard times tokens. There is a faint date on the coin of 1844, 25 and Plymouth, Pa. engraved on the front. There was something else written on the back but its worn off. I think its made of brass and it has a hole drilled at the top. It measures 1 3/16" diameter. It might have been an advertising or merchant token. Does anyone know anything about this coin/token?
That makes a lot of sense. Would the chit also have had the date stamp. This looks more like a coin or token. I wish I could see how it looked before it got so worn. Thanks for the comment!
This is a US coin, a cent. The date and stars are visible as well as the bottom of the bust.

Where would you get round disks in the 1850's that was easy to procure? It was a very small town*. People have used coins for a myriad of things other than money.

Thanks for all the input on my token. It does appear to be a coin with the 25 number and Plymouth Pa stamped on top. Would they have used old large pennies as pit chits? Maybe cheaper than having them made. Someone thought it was a coin because it was stored with a ton of old coins. Thanks again.

You are absolutely right. I kept looking at the coin with the hole on top and thought it weird that the date was on the side. It does have the date 1844. Thanks so much for showing me the light! An old penny stamped for another purpose.
