Wondering if anyone has ever seen anything like this, my thoughts are an shake axe or just a framing type hatchet. L is 6 1/4 blade W is 4 1/4. Sadly one rear tang broken from the back. It's interesting the different (darker ) color on the blade. This same color is on the tip of the remaining tang. I soaked it in vinegar to remove the large scale... Should I put a handle in it?
its called a claw axe , they are still being used and made today hard to say how old this one is from pic any markings on it chec link for more info on old type

Well I can not see any markings on it at all sadly.. It was found about 10 inches deep in some old tailing piles. These dredge piles began in the mid 1800 and ended mid 1900. The area dredged was 16 miles long and this was found about a mile and a half from the beginning, my guess it has been there quite some time.
