    I always thought this should be used for maple syrup, but do not know for sure. I think the top may be pewter.

      yep, a syrup pitcher: Central Glass Co. #796 Rope and Thumbprint, c1885/86. The patent date you have is for the pouring lid.

      you're very welcome : ) it's a really nice find; often the lid has the thumb tab broken. BTW not ALL pewter contains lead and can't say from photos. The lid is set in plaster; so it is best not to let it soak too long in water as the plaster can soften. Main value is in the glass at any rate.
