The more I read about this wonderful piece of history the more I love it. In 1876 Jarret and Palmer's express train went from New York City to San Francisco in 3 days 11 hours and 30 minutes. This is an original ticket from that miraculous feat and a commemorative sterling cover that is engraved with details of the Great Express Train Event from June 1 to June 4. The ticket has a separate ticket for each of the legs. The silver cover must have been made after the journey because it lists the journey arrival time it San Francisco. The front of the sterling cover says:
JARRETT & PALMERS SPECIAL FAST TRANS CONTINENTAL TRAIN DISTANCE OF 3317 MILES TIME 83 HOURS 39 MINUTES.
    The back is engraved:
THE GREAT RUN 1876 LEFT NEW YORK THURSDAY JUNE 1ST 1:03 AM ARRIVED SAN FRANCISCO SUNDAY JUNE 4TH 9:20 AM
    TIME 3 D 11 H 30 M
Supposedly the trip was arranged by Jarret to transport his theater Company and all of their costumes and props from New York to San Francisco . The story of the well publicized event is quite amazing and the fact that I have a piece of this wonderful US historical event is even more amazing.
