i had some INCREDIBLE finds today at Goodwill. This is one of them. i collect Mexican pottery probably more than i collect anything else, and i particularly like Tonala. This is a GREAT find! but the next one is even better!!
Green Tonala = cool!

gracias Virginia.vintage! tambien racer4four!
That's really pretty! I've been seeing some really cool pottery stuff like that. I recently found a owl and dove one. I don't know anything about this. Can you please tell me alittle bit about this.
it's called tonala pottery. it's made in tonala, near guadalajara. it's a style of pottery which is low-fired and painted w/ slips and then burnished w/ a small, shiny stone until it gets a slight sheen and then fired. it's a very old style pottery. the new tonala is mostly copied from a potter named ken edwards and it is not burnished, but glazed at a higher temp w/ glazes, including a shiny clear glaze. i like the old stuff like this one, as do most collectors. this cat and the face bank were both made sometime between the 1920s-50s. probably the early part of this. i have another very special type of tonala pottery here: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/108569-very-large-mexican-urn--burnished-birds that one is sort of the holy grail of tonala pottery - a huge piece.
That's really nice too. Thank you for sharing this information with me.
