My Grandmother's Grandfather gave her this brooch. A Northerner from Illinois, he fought in the Civil War on Tennessee battlegrounds. As it wasn't given to his wife nor his daughter, I believe he held onto it with some reservation before he finally gave it away before his death. I have never seen anything like this... Building in the background is more castle or fortress like with a brick fortress wall around. Though it has been boxed up for more than 90 years, it looks to have been smoothed down by touch from another time... Any thoughts anyone?

What an incredible cameo. I have not seen one like that before.
Hopefully some of the jewellery experts can help out.

I agree racer. Looks like an old iron smelter & that, to me, is a really strange image for a cameo.

Hi, excuse my english, please, I am dutch. If you Google on "Rebecca at the well cameo" you wil find more cameo's telling the same story in different ways. The lady is wearing 18th century clothing, but also on famous paintings with Bible-subjects figures are wearing clothes of the century the painter himself lived in. Same with cameo's, made in former centuries.

idcloisonne, not rare to me, I know a lot of these cameo's called 'Rebecca at the wall'. The story tells about a servant who is in search of a young woman to marry the son of his master, called Izaak, asking God: "the first woman that wil appear and will ask me : shall I give water to your camels too? Is she the woman I'll have to bring to marry?" No jar is to see but the story tells more than only giving water, she is going to her fathers house to ask him to give the foreigner a place for the night and so on, she has got beautiful jewelry from the foreigner ..and later on she is going to his masters house to marry his son Izaak. For me it is clear but we can ofcourse have a difference of opinion.

Thank you idcloisonne, and this site, Colletorsweekly, I just discovered, is also great to learn for me! When selling a cameo with a lady and a house or wall, with tree, it is always called Rebecca at the well. Although it can be just a lady and her house. It is called that way, and many cameo-carfers in Italy had to work very quick to earn money so the Rebecca cameo sometimes was made easy and less complicated, like: just a lady and her house.

I truly appreciate everyone's assistance, for the leads, information and multitude of resources in solving the origin of my Grandmother's cameo! I look forward to sharing this information with my family.

      Mahalo!
