This is my collection of 'Horseshoe Stem' cake stands made by O'Hara Glass Company around 1880; it is their pattern #99. The pattern is fairly rare and took me several years to acquire the set.

thanks eye... : ) and yes that is the name; it has a plain plateau with the only other detail being the slightly scalloped skirt. The horseshoes actually have nice detail showing the nails holes, groves and stippling. : )

I'm not sure how lucky these are. With the horseshoe in that position the luck will run out of it.
thanks AzTom : ) that is a common western cultural interpretation. However, there are also cultures espousing the downturned horseshoe prongs to shower good luck and blessings...
LOL, I had not heard that before. It does make sense though, if it's full of luck might as well pour some out and use it.

thanks Tom : ) Lots of interesting folklore about the horseshoe as a talisman. One interesting 'tale' is that for the horseshoe to be most effective is must be forged by a fine upstanding young bachelor of wholesome life and good character on St. John's eve.
