Just when you thought I wasn't going Japanese glass today I have posted this lovely vase.
But is it Japanese or Australian?
This vase has been made by Setsuko Ogishi, a Japanese born artist who moved to Australia in 1981. She had trained as a painter at the Kanazawa College of Arts, Japan, then studied glassblowing at the Jam Factory Craft Centre in Adelaide with the assistance of a grant from the Australia-Japan Foundation.
In 1987 Ogishi, with her husband Yutaka Mizuno, set up their first glass studio in Wollombi, NSW. They then moved and established the Ogishi Craft Centre in the Hunter Valley, NSW.
She still makes art glass there, and this piece is from her limited edition studio works, known as Ogishi Mizuno. It is marked to the base OM.
I really love her work. For me it displays a variation and development of Japanese art glass even though she did not learn glass blowing there.
I can see in her work a creative melody that I see in other Japanese glass.
As she says "Japanese art and culture are still important influences in my work. However, living on the land with the Australian bush at the door of my studio extends my creative view – the landscape is not only a source of creativity in itself but a source of joy to me. "
Height 27cm (10.5in)
