Need help identifying this one. Purchased this large, seemingly handcrafted lock and key from a vintage & antiques store in Dover New Hampshire years ago and still not sure its age or purpose.

I love it because it looks like it belongs on a creepy dungeon door or something! But realistically my best guess is that maybe it's for a barn door? The two pieces are unlocked by carefully inserting a long key into a hole in one end -- but it's tricky, almost like a puzzle. Get it just right and the top part pops off. Almost a Chinese lock but... not really?

The thing is heavy and quite detailed. Any ideas what it might be used for?

Strange lock that. I can "pop" locks on small planes faster than anybody can get a key out of their pocket, but this wouldn't be easy. Just seems to have an Oriental look to me.

      It's an oriental trunk lock

Thanks RobH! Still seems strange how unpolished and "handmade" this one looks, but I think you must be right.
