I recently purchased this from a vintage store. I don't have any information about this piece, but would love to know more about it. The handles were leather, but have long since rotted away. The tray is also missing and I haven't found any lettering or company names to let me know who may have manufactured the trunk. Thanks on advance for the help.
You have a circa 1900 -1920 dome top trunk. There were a plethora of companies producing these styles and types of trunks at the time -- so without an actual label you will be hard pressed to know who made this particular trunk. Hope this helps and welcome to Collector's Weekly!

Plethora is actually one of my favorite words, a tad geeky, I know, but it's true. Thank you for the information, I'll give it a thorough look to see if I can find any stamps or identification marks.
I looked in my "frickin" Identifit dictionary & couldn't find that "geeky" word. Did find it in a more current (1890's) one that also knew what a "merkin" is. I need to stop as I think my Word Correct is having a stroke! I think looking in a thesaurus would totally do the poor thing in.
BB2 thanks to your input I picked up a rust inhibitor and am using it on all my rusted metal parts on my trunks.... this one could use a good dose of it.... scrubbed with steel wool first then the rust inhibitor actually bonds the remaining rust back to metal and prepares it for painting. Now I have to go look up "merkin" thanks to you....

I could not find Ospho but the main ingredient in that product was in the one I picked up... forget the name of the ingredient but it is not in all of these types of products..
Actually Ospho is a common brand name. Also generically call "naval jelly". Just got my bottle out of the shop & it is made by Permatex & called "Rust Dissolver Gel". The main active ingredient is phosphoric acid which phosphorizes the rust & makes it a hard rust resistant surface. Get the rough stuff off 1st. Very resistant surface & hard. I just found out about it 20-30 yrs ago thru sailor friends. You can even apply to fresh cleaned steel & iron & it will form a greyish protective. Joking about the 20-30 yrs ago. Actually about 10-12 yrs. Do not use it on something like a rust spot on a blued gun as where you applied it will be very distinct & not natural.
Yes I bought "Rust Stop" and it has phosphoric acid and yes there is a white residue after use... paints over well and halts future rust,, sounds like a commercial.. just love getting hints and tips through this site!!!
Sounds like you had already gotten the right stuff. You can use a small glue brush to get into places like "ends" & never had it affect wood. I'm a firm believer is learning from other people's experiences & mistakes rather than my own. Anybody who can't follow those guidelines is classified as stupid & destined to failure.
This is great chess. I just found and bought one myself. I have the same questions. I thought maybe in the 1930's well it's even older. not sure yet what I want to do with it. Maybe keep the patina little paint on wood, then clear coat. Replace the leather handles. Build a drawer for inside upper area. It looks to me that use to be there. I bought it at a Goodwill I love to find things in there to restore. Main thing have a lot of fun with the projects.
