I found this hand crafted, hand painted, six panel leather bowl, in the toy section, at a thrift shop, and the panel images intrigued me. I wanted to know more about the bowl's history and purpose. Who was the artist, and who were the people depicted on the panels? I have not been able to find out anything on the internet.
By my observation, (see image #1) each of the 6 panels has stamped outlines that were hand-painted, and a hand painted scene in the center. The panels are cut and laced together, with leather strips, to create the bowl shape.
Each panel has an image that depicts a man or woman in costume attire or military garb.
At the center of the bowl (see image #3) is the image of two pairs of birds, standing beak to beak, with a daisy in the center of the circular pattern. The bowl measures (approx) 9.5 inch diam. at the widest points.
The backing (see image #2) is a piece of 6 panel leather, that is cut and laced together through the same holes used by the front panels, to bind the two leather bowl sections together. The number 4800 is written in blue ink on the back. Does anyone have any idea who may have created this bowl, who are the people depicted in the panels, what it was used for. I am wondering if the bowl was created as a teaching aid, to tell a story.
Thank you all, for your help.
