miniature carved wood

I picked up these two little gems up at an estate sale. I wouldn't even have noticed them, cuz they were laying face down just the way they are in the picture. After turning them over, I could see that they had some carvings that were beautifully done. I hope that my photographs do them justice.they kind of remind me of Japanese cork art, thats how detailed these are. I really don't get out of California much, let alone San Diego, but I've never seen carvings of wood this small. 1 is 3" tall and 4" wide, the shorter on is 2" tall and 4" wide. If anyone's seen this kind of work please let me know.
