These antique canning jars are wax lid canning crocks from the 1800's These rare antique stoneware crocks. Not many survived during this period because the flaw of the wax lids is that the crocks usually broke trying to open it. These primitive crocks are in wonderful condition for their age. Each crock has a slight variation of brown earth tones throughout. Each piece is a different color and has a slight pearlized look, a slight sheen that adds to the beauty. These crocks have a lip around the mouth to hold a metal lid that is placed on the top and then wax was poured into the indention to seal the jar. There are no apparent nicks or cracks in the jars.
The smaller crock appears to have a crack across the top and partly down the size but it does not go all the way around, and doesn't affect the structural integrity of the jar. It seems like someone passed these on through the family until it ended up at an auction with pictures and other memories.
The large crock on the left measures 4”across the top, it stands 7” tall and it measures 5 ¼ across the bottom. The smaller antique canning jar or crock on the right measures 6" tall and 4”across the top.
