    trunkman
    (149 items)

I started collecting trunks in earnest about four years ago. Since that time I have found many wonderful and interesting trunks. A Louis Vuitton trunk, due to their expense and rarity was always out of reach. Circumstance led however, to the purchase of this lovely trunk that I have restored. This one is early 1900's. The lv monogram canvas is hand woven. All the canvas is intact and it has a monogram and stickers from 3 hotels on it: The New Willard Hotel Washington, Hotel Arlington in Vermont and a New York Hotel that is a bit hard to read. It is a real joy to be able to fill out my collection with this classic piece of craftsmanship.

Wish I could help but know nothing about preserving canvass. Maybe some of my old, old sailor friends can make suggestions. Great find & hope you didn't have to mortgage the house!

Great find trunkman - in my 20 years of collecting trunks I have come across only 2 - and one was on the side of the road, the other at auction. Hoping that I can add one to my collection in the next few years.

Okay okay... I bought this off of a kijji add in New Brunswick. The price was reasonable for the condition and I restored it. About as exciting as it gets... although it was exciting to come across the add by chance I must say... and I had a wonderful person to negotiate with and work through the sale -- she went out her way to ship it to me which I appreciated. I have to change the pictures because the canvas is nicer than the picture suggests... crappy little sony camera..

did you ever find out its original owner. because in every trunk there was , it was some one very very very wealthy and well to do and or it could some one that was very very famous as well!!!
    6. SEAN68 SEAN68, 10 years ago
those serial numbers are on hand at Louis Vuitton , I would call them and they would have that information!! STUNNING TRUNK!!!
    7. SEAN68 SEAN68, 10 years ago
THOSE INTIALS , IS A start to hunt and I mean hunt , I see that your trunk is from the London store which tells me some one famous or very very rich had this and I believe the London store was the second LV STORE AT that Time..

Thanks so much Sean... I did get some background info. on one owner but I do not think they were the original owners... the Initial is HL or LH and beside that is written USA. on the same style and paint so this was special order for someone in the US. All of the hotel stickers are eastern states. The LV headquarters does not issue information on original owners as far I know,,, but they will tell you the date with the serial number I think.

Trunkman, you have been recommended as the go-to guy for trunk info. Can you look at the little one I posted last night and tell me what it was used for? And rough age estimate? I've had it for years and am now wanting to know more. Found in Texas.

Actually T-Mon, I get this slight feeling that I am putting a little pressure on you. LOL. Bet I've got you doing more research!

I've got 2 of those seaman's chests I made & would like to send you a free sample. I don't have a market place to sell them anymore & they are in my way. Would put them in the garage, but when we have tropical rains, it gets way too moist to keep them there. They make it just too hard to ship anything to Uncle Sambo's Plantation.

Very nice Trunkman!! I've been wanting an LV since I started collecting trunks about 3 years ago. I've yet to find one, let alone one that I could afford. The value on these LV trunks seems to increase annually. Nice work and a Great find!!

Thanks jscott for the nice comment... for some reason my camera is not picking up the nice brown in this trunk -- keeps coming out at little washed... In the four years I have seriously been collecting I have come across about four opportunities to purchase one but each posed an insurmountable roadblock. I missed a great deal on one by five minutes... So this one I put my best offer up front and it stuck... it helps to find one in poor shape and restore -- could not afford to buy this as is now...

The guy's been looking for it for about a century... one of those "Where's Waldo" stories running rampant in the antiquity market... pay no nevermind.... I'm told he had lots he lost track of... so much for his numbering system...

That's okay eye -- I am not keeping track, but you did miss the love button on my previous postings last month, one in October, three loves over the summer, and once in the spring... so no worries if you double clicked or even tripled clicked on this one....

Great find, very nice trunk! Congrats. Yes, it's rather hard to find a nice LV trunk that many of us could afford. P.S. The LV catalog listed this style as a "High Ladies Trunk" if it was over 27" tall and a "Low Ladies Trunk" from about 20 to 22" tall.

Marvin thanks for the great info... good to know the type of trunk this is..

No disrespect to you Tman, you know better than that from me, I'am just not a LV guy, don't understand all the hoopla about LV's, every LV looks the same and there way over priced, give me a full blown Martin Maier or a Romadka Brother's trunk any time over an LV trunk but that's just me, If you like it, I'am glad you have one in your collection, all the best, greendog.
    32. trunkman trunkman, 6 years ago
Thanks for your encouraging comment Elisabethan... it’s a nice addition to my collection!
    33. trunkman trunkman, 6 years ago
Hey Greendog... thanks for your honest comment... and subtle humour, ‘cause yes they are relatively the same aren’t they! I would agree, my Martiin Maier is by far my preferred between the two. How LV was able to elevate through savvy marketing is a story in itself. I do have a penchant for some of these French trunks though, I admit. Thanks again, always appreciate your comments!

Your welcome. I often sneek in and have a look at your trunks. It's not my field but they interest me. I find them most beautiful and it is interesting to think about where they have travelled. I can understand your collection. Like jewelry it is something you can still use :)
