Now this is more my style ! I love Nippon and have several pieces. This little 6" vase is a beauty, despite the fact that all three of the tiny feet are badly chipped. Still the body, top, and handles are in perfect condition. The moriage details on the handles and band at the top are definitely art nouveau. The shape and decor are unusual. "Van Patten's ABC's of Collecting Nippon" show it as being the "Desert Scene" line. This dates from 1911 when Egyptian and desert themes were very popular. Egypt always being a favorite destination on a "Grand Tour". The mark is #47 in their guide. The "M" in the wreath stands for Morimura Bros. who were the importers. They produced plates, match holders and vases of all kinds in this design. A shame about the flaws but how could I pass it up. -Mike-
I think the damaged feet are pretty easy to overlook with this one Mike.
Great find.
Thanks Karen :) The back one is the worst. It's all the way across the tip. The other two have smaller chips to the corners. Really can't figure out how the top and handles remained unscathed, but I'm sure glad they did !
The painting on this is so unique, I really love! The Nippon that I have is mostly floral and such
If you had passed this up because of the chipped legs you would have deserved to never find another piece again!!! It probably has that satiny smooth finish? What a beautiful little gem.
Thanks Braider :) and yes it does have that finish . They put the price sticker right over the camel's head and boy was it hard to remove the residue. I thought it might damage the decoration but all is well.
Thanks Ken :) Yes the one draw back to the thrift stores. Comes in perfect and gets put out damaged. I was lucky that Christi pulled this for me at Salvation. She knows what I look for and I've told her about my love of Nippon. Had it been a plate or dish I would have passed, but this was exceptional in it's design and shape.
