The answer I get when I ask someone if they know what this is.
Cleaning out a "junk drawer" in my mother's home and I came across this item. It was in a bag along with some very old salt and pepper shakers, so I am wondering if it is a kitchen item.(?)
The chain keeps the two halves from opening any further (and is not detachable). Photo shows a closeup of the very sharp spikes that line the inside of the "jaws".
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Aren't these interesting? Maybe they slip over some type of vegetable and score it or shuck it? Laughing, I'm just thinking...
