It measures 24" X 12" X 12" and originally had a leather handle on top to carry it with. Wondering if it is for sure 1800's and if it was a stagecoach trunk or what else its purpose may have been. Could it be Civil War era? (Or the War of Northern Aggression, depending on which you prefer.) Hardware that held leather handle has embossed star on each one. It's in rough shape, but I love it. I probably have my categories wrong, but no listing option for travel or trunks.
CALL FOR T-Mon! Anxious to hear your comments. Actually, we have more experts on trunks, but I have kind of bonded with T-Mon & hope I haven't offended the others.
Nice trunk -- actually more than likely a document box as a handle on the top would suggest as well as size. Seems to me it could be civil war era or a little after that but definitely from the mid to later 1800's... looks like someone used if for a ballot box somewhere along the way. I find these hard to date exactly in part because the construction of these simpler boxes used common parts for many years. Perhaps one of our resident experts could weigh in -- I tend to know general information but there are others who are more specific. Hopes this helps a little...
Thank you guys pointing me towards help, Riply and Blunder. And thank you, trunkman, for getting back to me!
No problem at all Forthe. My lifes' obsession had been to dump work on other people. LOL
LOL. Mine too. That's why I teach. I'm always dumping work on my poor students.
We call it politically, - delegating. Works well at covering up the "dumping work on..." statement.
