I really like this vase with it's melon colours and shape.
I am not sure if it was made to look like a melon but it is so appealing!
Made by Joetsu Crystal under their Kurata brand this vase has multiple layers of white and clear, with light green glass and then dark green glass applied.
Typically for Kurata the glass has been sand blasted externally after production.
No sticker but it came in it's original box (I love a co-box!) and with a pamphlet. I really need to learn Japanese......
Joetsu Crystal is not very well known by glass collectors here but they have had a large and creative output and clearly have had some great designers working there. I am aware of a number of known designers who did time there before moving on (including my current fave Ueno) and it has offered exchange placements for overseas glass artists such as Stanislav Žampach.
Joetsu Crystal still produce a large amount and range of hand made glass at their Tsukiyono workshop where they have an 11 crucible melting kiln, 4 continuous annealing furnaces, a 5 group cooling furnace and 8 sand blasting workplaces. Current designers include Takashi Miyata, Akira Takahashi and Shogo Kariyazaki.
As a note Joetsu is a place, Kurata the family who established the company in 1905.
I can not confirm the age of this vase but the box and pamphlet lean me to the late 70s early 80s.
Height and width 17cm (6.5in)
Stunning !! ;-)
It's wonderful Karem :)..Imagine if they had cased the inside with a watermelon red !
Wow thanks Surfdub! (although that comment is a bit of a Seanerism lol!)
Haha Mike - that would have looked just fantastic!
I called it a jam melon vase coz when I was a kid I remember round melons like this with a light green interior that was added to jam fruit like plums or berries to help stretch the jam mix and as a setting agent.
Really love this!
Thanks so much CindB and Jewels for loving it so much!
Thanks too Lisa - I am gaining bits of knowledge as I go along which makes it even more fun!
very beautiful!!
Thank you Sean!

HEEEEYYY!! Of course this belongs to you! I love it! Lots of great info too. I always know where to go when I think it's Japanese!
haha that would have been amazing had the inside been red, you're right mike!
It would need black inclusions too Sue! yeah!! I'm looking for it's sister......
Thanks for the revisit Cindy. I see this one everyday and still dig it. Glad you do too!
Absolutely fantastic. My favorite of yours.
Why thanks Sir Dean!
What a beauty, glad it came around again. :)
What an epically beautiful piece!
Thanks Tahiti. It's put away at the moment (I have too much glass and need to rotate it!) so I'm glad you commented to remind me of it's awesomeness. That's a good thing!!
