If you can post some better pics-- I'd be happy to help decipher it.
A larger picture showing the entire box top would be helpful.

Hi Scott, I added a pic. I made out more: baker mount olive...toms brook...
Looks very old and interesting, great find!!
Thank you vv, I love old boxes! Hide clutter, everything looks great!
I can't see it.
Sorry, I am fairly good at reading older writing, but your photos are really messing with my eyes-- must be the contrast.

Hi scott, I apologize for the photos, I have made out a little more, just cannot make out that last word. Thanks for tryimg, much appreciated. : )
Mount Olive NC - Tom Brooks VA
The last line could be a railroad abbreviation.
Ah thank you walk softly! Yes! Could be a & a something
---O & A & ??.?
Hi walksoftly, yes, o & a & ?? There is a word under mount olive as well, hmmm. There is a town in VA called mount olive, so not sure. Thanks for your help, I like your idea about railroad abbreviation. That makes sense
There was a railway Co. in Virginia called the Orange and Alexandria Railroad 1848-1867, it then merged with the Manassas Gap Railroad to become the Orange, Alexandria and Manassas Railroad 1867-1872.
The word under Mount Olive could be a NC railway.
The box could have been sent North to Manassas Junction on a NC railway then transferred over to the Orange, Alexandria and Manassas Railroad for the remainder of the trip.
All this is speculation of course.

Omgoodness! Walk softly, I believe this is it! I believe orange and alexandria railroad. This is bakers box for transport. I suppose last name baker. Thank you so much. If true, I can date it as well.
You're most welcome, it was a fun mystery, thanks for posting.
I now believe that it is orange, Alexandria, and Manassas railroad 1867-1873. Thank you walks!
I might go show it to the railroad museum.
Do you live in that part of the US?
Yes I do, found in a barn sale from a lady who goes and collects stuff to sell. She called it a Shenandoah valley box based on the toms brook being written on it. Thanks again!
I love boxes too. I figured out why not that long ago...not only can you stuff them, but when you find them, it seems there's always a surprise in them :)
Hi Valentino, just a guess, but I believe for transporting items, used again and again. It is about a foot and a half long x a foot wide. When I found it there was nothing inside. :) Hi share, so true! I remember as a kid putting stuff in shoe boxes and such and finding them again later was so much fun!
hope you had a great day ,
I did! You too Lundy--hope yours was great!
