I found this on one of my treasure hunts. I think it is an old inkwell, but am not completely sure. The lid does have a small slit on the side. The top is signed on the inside "STERLING". The bottom silver line around the glass is marked either 999/1000 or 900/1000. It has a little logo that looks like a faded "A" with little scrolls on both sides. The final mark says 4647. The logo and numbers are very hard to read. I am trying to find out what year this is from, the maker ... and exactly what this is. Is it an inkwell or some type of vanity jar? Any ideas? I'd love to hear them. Thank you for taking the time to look at this.

Could it be a meths burner & the slot in the top for the wick ??its a lovely looking object ;-)

Lol ... wait...maybe that mark on it says W.W. (jk). Anyway, thanks for looking ... glad you like it. I am pretty sure its an inkwell because of the slot on the edge...it looks like a small quill pen would fit through it. I am surprised quite often about what certain objects were used for ...

This is an old post and you most likely have the answer by now. The silver overlay design is definitely Alvin. I can almost make out their mark. If you look up "Alvin silver hallmark" you'll know for sure. Pretty sure the pineapple top was not part of the original piece. The original lid probably matched the base. The shape is wrong for an inkwell. More like a powder jar for a vanity. Their perfume bottles are stunning.
