I just bought this beautiful trunk, and was wondering if anyone could tell me more about it! Also, it looks as if it may have been painted, and was seeking advice on how to safely remove it.

Thanks! I was so excited when I saw it on Craigslist for $30! Its beautiful, but I'd like to remove the paint. It looks like the beautifully patterned cream part in the center is painted, I'm not sure what's underneath. Also, it looks like the hardware is painted black, as well as the sides, (which I'm not sure is supposed to be that way or not), and the little silver circles look like they're painted as well.
The handles are both still attached, but seem to be tearing a little. But the wheels on the bottom are all still attached.
A really nice "Barrel Top" trunk from the late 1890's most likely. Very easy to get the paint off of the center tin -- chemical paint stripper with steel wool -- almost slides off -- looks like you will find tin that has rusted somewhat underneath (which is why it appears brown underneath and mostly likely why it was painted in the first place) and to get that all shinny you would need a wire brush drill bit and a steady hand and oodles of patience. I have done this on several of my trunks and am pleased with the result. The tin on the sides and banding would have originally been painted black and I tend to leave these repaints as is... I personally love this trunk as it is... nice colour combo and a nice find!
