I love this Awaji pot i just picked up. there are a lot of different levels of quality in Awaji ware and this one reminds me of the pieces of high quality pottery. It appears to have a yellow underglaze w/ an orange peel glaze over it. This brings out the 3-d quality of the molded dragon really well. i'm very happy w/ this purchase!

The colour mate! It was an experiment used across the world. New minerals were used in pottery and in glass experiments. Looking for new effects. I have a monkey with a similar glaze here on CW .... JaPanese but later production than yours. Another factory in England Royal Lancastrian and others used it too. In glass it has its own effects.

There's some interesting comments about uranium oxide in Fiesta ware here:

thank you vetraio! i did look it up after your post and found many interesting stories about it. i wonder when it was first used? i'm trying to figure out when this pot was made.

i'm pretty sure that this was made in the 1920s. i found some other Awaji in this glaze from then. [but this one is so much better because of the dragon!]

thank you surfdub66! i agree and i'm very happy w/ this purchase. i got it on ebay, but they didn't list it as Awaji or it would have gone MUCH higher.
