We can't wait to get all the masking tape off and put the lid on it and the manaquin inside and put this awesome warbird up on a Building so all who pass by can see it and remember the impact the P-51 had on WWII.
These planes were about 100 mph faster than the Messerschmidt B109s and packed a real wallop with their 6 50 caliber machine guns along with bombs and later rockets. They were the most aerodynamic plane ever produced up till jets came on the scene. The Merlin engine gave them a whopping 1647 hp with a flying range of about 1000 mi loaded. The only negative comment was the loud noise in the cockpit. Duhhhh! Sitting right behind that huge powerful V12 engine running straight pipes about 4-5' right in front of the pilot makes for a lot of noise! I'm confident that everyone who ever flew one would have serious hearing loss as a result.
As we get it finished we will post more info about this plane and how we got it and it's history.
Putting it on a building? Is this a replica or the real thing?
This is a carbon fiber clone built for racing/exhibition etc back in the 70s. They take about 3000 hrs to build and are very rare but only weigh about 1900#s as compared to the aluminum planes at 6900 #s. Also this is about one tenth the cost of a real warbird.
