We bought this metal chest at an auction 3 years ago for £4. I have stored a few of my childhood memories in it. I was going through it today and saw this coin type of badge embedded on the front. To be completely honest I never noticed it before and was wondering if there was any history to it?

The medal has the diamond-shaped BRITISH REGISTRY mark which will allow you to find out exactly when it was registered. Look up the marks on-line and it will tell you the earliest date it could have been made. This mark was used from 1842 to 1967. RER(BOB)

Wow thank you! I have uncovered a bit more around the outside it says the Victoria dress box. The markings are a 1 right at the top in the bubble, 17 just below that, left hand side looks like a 9, right hand side looks like p bottom looks like w. In the middle there is Rd with 1 small line underneath the d.
I'm quite excited thinking of the history of this small trunk!

Your Metal Chest was registered on the 17th of March 1851. The 1 on top denotes the material (Metalware). The 9 on the left is the Bundle (batch). It could have been made at a later date up to 1883. After this date, the Registry mark was not used. RER(BOB)

Thank you for your help! I am so intrigued, I have looked for the design of the badge/medal but have not found one with the victoria dress box around the outside. I have also tried to find another trunk with a similar badge/medal on it but have had no luck. Could this be a genuine Mark for this type of trunk or something added later?
