I got this in a mystery box at an estate sale. It looks like it was worked into some kind of tool. Its twice as heavy as a bone this size would be. Im thinking early NATIVE AMERICAN tool. Maybe petrified? Just wondering what it is .Please help.

    Best regards.

too funny! blunderbuss2 leading CW people astray w/ his 'memory stick'! my memory sticks too - more and more, everyday! but you know you're in trouble when you're stuck on the same memory, all the time!

but in seriousness, this is a very, very odd piece or possibly a total fake. if it's from the Americas, it would have to be under 18-20,000 yrs old - not nearly long enough for bone to become fossilized. very mummified, yes! petrified, NO! you need millions of years for that to take place. all the organic matter in the piece is gone and has been replaced w/ mineral matter in order for petrification to take place. when you consider that homo species have only really been toolmakers for the past three million years, and only in very specific locations - like the Rift Valley in Eritrea and Kenya, it puts things into a proper perspective. The Homo species fossils are actually petrified, but only partially. For that reason, they are very fragile/brittle and for the most part, tiny little pieces.

It looks like part of a slingshot - using cow knuckle bones, which are pretty heavy and durable even without petrification.
