I found this beautiful, vintage painting at the Alameda Flea today. The painting itself is approx 18" wide x 14" tall. This is an original painting. the tiny detail and overall affect of this piece rivals Maxfield Parrish himself! It reminds me of the Cornish skies Parrish painted under. Look at the very finely detailed branches in the third close-up! whoever this artist is used some extremely tiny brushes in this simple painting, when you inspect it closely is really a tour-de-force! [can you tell i really love this painting?!]. the simple white frame and large white matte appear to be period and made especially for this painting.

i bought it from a really kind and nice person - this 69 yr old woman from just outside of Montreal who has had it on her wall for over 30 years.

Can anyone tell me about the initials? anyone care to guess who this was done by and when? i cannot figure out where original paintings and artwork go on CW. CAN ANYONE TELL ME?

Hi ho2cultcha - we just don't have a good spot on CW for paintings and original art (yet) because eBay doesn't have a great selection of this stuff, and we don't want to create a smorgasbord category with a bunch of terrible amateur art. Hopefully we will work it out soon and create some categories for paintings, watercolors, sculpture, etc. but until then it's best to leave them uncategorized (unless it's folk art).

thank you for the explanation Hunter. i see quite a few pieces on ebay that look interesting enough though. a simple category for original 'paintings' and another for 'sculpture' would suffice, i'd think. maybe it's a lot more work than i'm guessing though... thanks again for the reply.

i've just added an image of the signature/monogram. i increased the color and contrast in order to read it more clearly. any ideas on what initials they are? any help really appreciated as i've hit a dead end but love the painting!

Glad to help :) we're definitely working on it!

ah! you folks are great! thanks so much idcloisonne and Hunter!! one thing about this painting that has me a bit confused are the two obelisks or smokestacks or ?? on the left beyond the tree. what are they? and the big wall is also odd - not what i'd expect in a new england or upstate new york painting [which this looks like otherwise]. it could be from canada - quebec or the maritime provinces too. the teensy weensy brushstrokes don't look at all amateur, but really professional. i'd be surprised if this were an amateur painting or by an unknown artist. i bought it from a really neat women from Montreal who has owned it for over 30 yrs.

thanks so much idcloisonne. i don't know how to tell the difference between gouache and oil, but gouache rings a bell w/ this piece for some reason. could be wrong tho! my family is from Beauceville/Sherbrook area as well as L'Isle Frambois [something like that] on the st laurence, and Nova Scotia. yes, it could be an unknown, but i'm hopeful i'll find out one of these days... can you make out the monogram?
    16. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 10 years ago
thanks again idcloisonne! i believe the work is on paper. i haven't opened the frame yet, although it has been opened and the paper is torn around 3 edges, so someone has had a peak. and thanks for the guess on the monogram. i'll check it out.

Guess what? We have a new family for visual arts! Just plopped this into the painting category :)

thank you Hunter! that's great news!

i figured out who the artist is in this painting - the initials are CWB - Cyril Walter Bion - 1889-1976, British.
